Summary

On the first snowy night of winter, Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope sets off for her home in the hills。 Though the road is familiar, she misses a turning and soon becomes lost and disorientated。 A car has skidded off the narrow road in front of her, its door left open, and she stops to help。 There is no driver to be seen, so Vera assumes that the owner has gone to find help。 But a cry calls her back: a toddler is strapped in the back seat。

Vera takes the child and, driving on, she arrives at a place she knows well。 Brockburn is a large, grand house in the wilds of Northumberland, now a little shabby and run down。 It’s also where her father, Hector, grew up。 Inside, there’s a party in full swing: music, Christmas lights and laughter。 Outside, unbeknownst to the revelers, a woman lies dead in the snow。

As the blizzard traps the group deep in the freezing Northumberland countryside, Brockburn begins to give up its secrets, and as Vera digs deeper into her investigation, she also begins to uncover her family’s complicated past。

4。5I have really missed these characters! It was great to return to Vera’s world。

I didn't realize when I got this that it took place in Britain, and didn't realize that there was a tv show based on the Vera Stanhope novels。 It was a very good book, surprised at who was the killer。 Liked Vera very much, something new for me having an older female detective! Another good Vera Stanhope mystery。

Superb! So well written and a terrific plot。 Just a few clues for the reader to grab hold of, if one is paying close attention as to who the villain is, but so many red herrings that one cannot be sure until the climax。 Brilliant!

Can’t wait for the next book! That’s the problem with finding such a special author。 It’s hard to wait for the next book。 Ann Cleese’s is a fabulous author。 Her characters are so real you feel you know them。 I would recommend any of her books。

I've rated this a 4, but I am ignoring the fact that in the audio version I listened to, there were a few times when a character's British accents was impossible for me to understand unless I backtracked a couple of times to listen again。 I've rated this a 4, but I am ignoring the fact that in the audio version I listened to, there were a few times when a character's British accents was impossible for me to understand unless I backtracked a couple of times to listen again。 。。。more

It’s Vera, so we love her。 But- 3。5 downgraded to 3 because the narrator of the audiobook did the male characters in a German accent。 Seriously? A "who-dun-it" and I liked the setting and characters。 Vera Stanhope, one of the mains, was likeable and I liked her no-nonsense attitude。 Other characters that must be in the rest of the series so I will add this series to my "want to read" list as I want to follow the escapades of the Stanhope character。 Easy read and kept me wanting to continually read when I could。 A "who-dun-it" and I liked the setting and characters。 Vera Stanhope, one of the mains, was likeable and I liked her no-nonsense attitude。 Other characters that must be in the rest of the series so I will add this series to my "want to read" list as I want to follow the escapades of the Stanhope character。 Easy read and kept me wanting to continually read when I could。 。。。more

Although I'm a big Vera fan (TV show), I have never read an Ann Cleeves - Vera book。 It did not disappoint。 The mystery was fantastic and I didn't guess the villain ahead of time。 I loved the complex group of characters in the story and the story's connection to Vera's estranged, distant family and the emotions attached to being excluded from the family。 An excellent read for all, especially the Vera fan。 Although I'm a big Vera fan (TV show), I have never read an Ann Cleeves - Vera book。 It did not disappoint。 The mystery was fantastic and I didn't guess the villain ahead of time。 I loved the complex group of characters in the story and the story's connection to Vera's estranged, distant family and the emotions attached to being excluded from the family。 An excellent read for all, especially the Vera fan。 。。。more

Unputdownable!!Loved this book - I read it in 2 sittings。 I confess to being a fan of Brenda Blethyn’s Vera 。 The TV series certainly lives up to the book and vice versa 。

Thoroughly enjoy the Vera novels!

Happiness is a good mystery! MmmI couldn't put the book down。 You never know who the culprit is until the end。 It is so interesting to think as you are reading, is this the one。I'm going to miss Vera , she has become a friend,。 Ann Cleeves you must write another Vera book。 Thank you for the fun! I don’t know how Ann Cleeves does it。 Her books just get better and better。 Vera is such a wonderful character。 Looking forward to more adventures。

The televised series provides a better narrative than this book did。 Still a good read。

I thought this was the latest Shetland series and had never read any of the Vera Stanhope series - I really enjoyed it。 Ann Cleeves has a great way of wrapping you up in the story。 No I want to read all the others!

Sheila Menard

This book is the first book I have read in this series, and I hope to read the other books in the series。

I enjoyed the Jimmy Perez novels, so I thought I’d try this series。 I probably should have started with Book 1 rather than Book 9。 There was a lot of filler, and yet key discoveries were dropped in towards the end。 None of the characters - including Vera herself - were fleshed out particularly well。

We enjoy watching Vera on PBS but this was a frustrating book。

First of the Vera Stanhope novels that I've read。 Good, solid mystery。 Will pick up some of the earlier ones to begin filling in some of the characters。 First of the Vera Stanhope novels that I've read。 Good, solid mystery。 Will pick up some of the earlier ones to begin filling in some of the characters。 。。。more

Another engrossing Vera Stanhope mystery! This narrative does a good job of making us feel the landscape of a manor house and surrounding cottages, forest, and village during a snowy December in Northumbria。

First Vera book I've read (who needs that in order stuff?) and I was drawn in。 I have to admit I didn't see the identity of the murderer coming, but was a little annoyed by the "Vera knows and explains it all" at the end。 This author has a talent for creating realistic places and people, which is my thing, so I might read more of her。 First Vera book I've read (who needs that in order stuff?) and I was drawn in。 I have to admit I didn't see the identity of the murderer coming, but was a little annoyed by the "Vera knows and explains it all" at the end。 This author has a talent for creating realistic places and people, which is my thing, so I might read more of her。 。。。more

Excellent drama as ever and the Northumbria landscape comes to life。 Glad I’ve watched the Vera BBC series as Brenda Blethyn portrays this fabulous character。

This was my second Blind Date with a Book from the library。 I'm not surprised I never heard of this author or her two TV series, because I wouldn't seek out this genre。 It reminded me of the "gentle" 10pm TV dramas my parents watched while I was growing up。 Barnaby Jones, Mannix, Barretta - you get the idea。 That being said, the story was a quick read with some likeable, quirky characters。 The plot was well developed and I wanted to get to the bottom of things an find the murderer。 Friends tell This was my second Blind Date with a Book from the library。 I'm not surprised I never heard of this author or her two TV series, because I wouldn't seek out this genre。 It reminded me of the "gentle" 10pm TV dramas my parents watched while I was growing up。 Barnaby Jones, Mannix, Barretta - you get the idea。 That being said, the story was a quick read with some likeable, quirky characters。 The plot was well developed and I wanted to get to the bottom of things an find the murderer。 Friends tell me I might really enjoy her other series, The Shetland Series, so I might take a look。 。。。more

Another win by Ann Cleeves。 Murder, mystery, family secrets, triangles of relationships, fascinating landscapes, this one has it all。 Tangled, twisted storyline that Vera picks apart slowly but surely。 This is not a hurried read, and is even a bit slow in spots but worth settling into。 Ready for #10

I really enjoyed this novel as I love the TV series as well。 Vera is her usual stalwart and irascible detective inspector。 She leads her team and puts her life in danger。 The characters are all well written and the plot get me riveted。 Cleeves deals with social issues that are important and relevent to our times。
